Canada Disability Benefit Qualification
 The Canada Disability Benefit (CDB) is a monthly, tax-free financial support provided to eligible working-age Canadians with disabilities. To qualify for the CDB, you must meet specific criteria related to your age, residency, tax filing status, and approval for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC).
🎯 Who Can Qualify for the Canada Disability Benefit?
To be eligible for the Canada Disability Benefit, you must meet all of the following conditions:
- Be between 18 and 64 years old. You must be at least 18 years old and under 65 on the day your application is received by Service Canada.
- Be a resident of Canada. You must meet one of the following residency conditions:
- Canadian citizen
- Permanent resident
- Protected person (refugee status)
- Temporary resident who has lived in Canada for at least 18 months
- Registered under the Indian Act
- Be approved for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC). You must have a valid and active Disability Tax Credit certificate approved by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).
- Have filed your 2024 income tax return. You and your spouse or common-law partner (if applicable) must file your 2024 taxes. This is used to determine your benefit amount.
Applications must be submitted with accurate documentation, and eligibility will be verified by Service Canada in coordination with CRA.
📌 Important Notes
- If you are turning 65 during the year, partial benefits may apply.
- You must continue to file your income taxes annually to remain eligible.
- If your Disability Tax Credit status changes or expires, your benefit eligibility could be affected.
📅 When to Apply
Applications for the Canada Disability Benefit opened in June 2025. To receive payments starting in July 2025, you must apply before June 30, 2025. You can apply:
- Online through Service Canada
- By phone
- In person at a Service Canada office
- By mail
Incarcerated persons
- If you’re serving a sentence of imprisonment of 2 years or more in a federal penitentiary, you’re not eligible for the benefit except for the first and last month of your incarceration
- If you become ineligible because you get incarcerated, you’ll need to re-apply for the benefit when you are released
